French writer/director Catherine Breillat, whose Romance beats Eyes Wide Shut as this year's smartest, wariest sex film (if not the most fascinating),
hasn't been heard from in the U.S. since 36 Fillette was exported back in 1987. Taking its title from the purported dress size of its 14-year-old
protagonist, 36 Fillette is a low-key character study involving an elaborate courtship between that girl (16-year-old Delphine Zentout, in a fine
performance) and a 40ish salesman (Etienne Chicot). She's on vacation with her family; he's keeping a posh hotel room and spending long nights at dance
clubs following a separation from his wife.

Stig (Johan Widerberg) is a 15-year-old boy growing up in Malmo, Sweden, in 1942. While WWII rages in Europe, Sweden remains politically neutral, though
it's all but impossible for the people of Malmo not to have an opinion about the conflict, and Stig's own brother intends to volunteer to serve on a
submarine. Stig has fallen in love with his schoolteacher Viola (Marika Lagercrantz), who is 22 years his senior. To his great surprise, Viola confesses
that she's also attracted to Stig; she's stuck in a failing marriage to Kjell (Tomas von Bromssen), a depressive alcoholic salesman, and there's
something in Stig's naive desire that touches her. The two become involved in a passionate love affair, which Viola makes little effort to disguise from
Kjell; in fact, Kjell becomes friendly with Stig and tries to teach him about his great passion in life, classical music. Eventually, Stig becomes
attracted to Lisbet (Karin Huldt), a girl from school his own age, and when they become involved, Stig breaks off his affair with Viola. Viola is not
eager to give up Stig, and in time, she retaliates with violence. Lust Och Fagring Stor was the final film from noted Swedish director Bo Widerberg; he
died two years after its release -- at the age of 56. Jonah Widerberg, who played Stig, is Bo's son, and was 21 at the time the film was released.

In the film industry, there is a cliche saying ‘no children or animals’, meaning that these two categories are known to be difficult to work
with and should best be avoided. However, in the case of Les Diables, one sees an exception to this rule because all the children put in such a big
effort. Especially the two young leads, Adele Haenel and Vincent Rottiers, who turned out such wonderful performances.
Les Diables is not an easy film. There are disturbing images, disturbing ‘child’s logic’. This is a very bold attempt of a rather difficult topic.
Society, law and society, coming out of age and sexual awareness, two misfits, two runaways and two outlaws. Nevertheless, there are a few tender
moments - when the two children are together, when they are in a world of their own, they have a kind of sweetness that no one outside it can
understand. Here, the director depicts love, strong love, an unbreakable bond that no one can take away; an inter-dependency - they really needed each
other to exist, to survive.
Adele Haenel was superb in playing the mentally retarded 12-year old, with her dumbness and her special walk and feet stamping as well as her very
innocent sweet smile. However, Vincent Rottiers as the 15-year old was particularly impressive. His expression said it all…his anger, despair, hatred,
his inner conflict, his love and sense of responsibility that forced him to mature before his age. He portrayed them all incredibly. He is definitely
one to watch out for the future.
The story may not be completely plausible and it may even be upsetting at times, but the director has truly produced a remarkable piece of work with the
two young leads. On leaving the cinema, one could not help but feel utterly sympathetic to the two poor ‘devils’ who did not know which way to turn.
It is worthwhile just to go and see their performances and their performances alone!

They say in how-to books and classes about screenplay writing that the author must grab his audience's attention within the first 25 pages (roughly
the first 25 minutes of screentime) or run the risk of completely losing their interest. One of the many qualities of The Little Girl Who Lives Down
the Lane (1976), one of the best and most unsung films of the seventies, is just how quickly it generates tension, mystery, and utter fascination.
There isn't a movie quite like it, nor is it easily categorized: it's sort of a horror movie, something like a suspense-thriller, and partly something
else, something maybe indefinable.
Jodie Foster stars as Rynn, who in the first scene is celebrating her 13th birthday (which is also, coincidentally, Halloween), lighting the candles
of a birthday cake she has made for herself. There's a knock at the door of her small but attractive house (on the Canadian coastline), and creepy
neighbor Frank (Martin Sheen), the wayward son of Rynn's unpleasant, racist landlady, Mrs. Hallett (Alexis Smith), pushes his way through the door and
introduces himself.
Within minutes, it becomes clear that married Frank is a child predator setting his sights on Rynn. As he makes advances on her, she oddly dances
around his moves rather than call upon her unseen father, a well-known poet apparently working in another part of the house. Later, there are obvious
clues that neither Rynn's mother (dead, so she says) or father are around at all, and that somehow she's been living in the house all by herself for
some time. Where are they? What happened to them?
